what does the Furniture Station do?

Good quality items of furniture, electrical appliances, new cots, some new beds, and household items that have been donated by the public and organisations are collected throughout Stockport and stored in the warehouse. Our clients come and select the furniture items they require, which they are given and are then delivered to their homes for a small delivery fee.

Electrical items; cookers, fridges and fridgefreezers, microwave ovens and vacuum cleaners are tested and repaired, if required, by our Service Engineer. Cookers are delivered and installed by the Service Engineer.

Clients are referred by recognised referral agencies which include Social Services, Health, Housing and Information Centre Workers, Citizens Advice Bureaux, Welfare Rights and the Women's Refuge, amongst many others. The Referral Agency checks eligibility which is receipt of an appropriate means-tested benefit. Clients include homeless people going into accommodation, including refugees, lone parents, elderly and young people; basically all those who cannot afford to buy the items needed to turn a roof over their heads into a home.

Those in need are given the opportunity to furnish a new home, or replace worn out essential household goods without having to spend the money needed for food or heating. Although Stockport is perceived as affluent it has pockets of significant deprivation.
