Plush Upholstery at The Furniture Station

This April, The Furniture Station kindly received the support of  Plush Upholstery who supported our workshop volunteers and General Assistant with training and skills in re-upholstery.

Andrea Austin from Plush Upholstery trained our volunteers how to reupholster drop-in style dining seats in order to meet with fire and safety regulations so that they can be re-used for our clients, preventing the donations from having to go to landfill and extending our offering.

It has been very fortunate that along with the training obtained, we have now received funding from The Barnabus Trust in order to now put these skills into action and purchase the necessary tools and materials for the project.

The group thoroughly enjoyed their day with Plush Upholstery and are looking forward to bringing what they learnt at Andrea’s class into The Furniture Station’s workshop, allowing further items to be re-use and  available for families and homes that need them.

With receiving around 4,000 items each year, this is yet another development in the organisation to broaden the operation to cover other items as both supply and demand permit.

Showroom now open at Dunton Tower, Brinnington

Following the Fun Day events at Brinnington on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th April, where Stockport Homes and The Furniture Station teamed up to raise awareness of furniture re-use, providing knowledge to the community of how local residents can access good-quality re-used furniture; the first showroom at Dunton Towers is now open and available to visit.

The showroom which is located at the bottom floor of the tower allows residents, both existing and new who may be in need of such essential household items for their home, to get an idea of the type of good-quality furniture that can be accessed for such minimal fee.

“From just £5 for a single bed, £25 for a full three piece suite, £20 for a wardrobe and £25 for dining table & set of four chairs, we wanted to bring the good-quality re-used items that we regularly collect from donors directly to the towers, and put on display the range of  essentials which may be needed for existing and new residents in order for them to furnish their home.”

Joanne Watson, Fundraiser

The showroom will be available throughout the year, and be publicly open for visitors on Wednesdays from 10am-11am, where a housing officer will be available to answer any questions regarding a referral to use the services provided by the Furniture Station.

The Furniture Station continues to operate to relieve poverty and distress to people in need living in Stockport through the provision of essential household furniture.  The Tower Power project partnership with Stockport Homes  aims to create more awareness of the service available within Brinnington, encouraging residents to be actively involved in re-use and helping families most in need in maintaining their tenancies.

Another happy ending for families in Stockport

“As a teenage parent who encountered complications at home, Miss S was referred to Stockport Homes to help find a two bedroom house for her and her son. Upon moving into her house an appointment was made to the Furniture Station in order for her to be able to furnish her home.

She purchased a three piece suite, a dining table, and a set of 4 chairs, a new bed, a set of drawers and a hoover for a nominal, affordable cost with delivery.

With all her household items paid for, she could concentrate on other matters and enrolled onto a hairdressing course and found a full time nursery for her son. Since buying her furniture Miss S has felt confident with maintaining her property, has been budgeting well and even saving with the credit union towards her deposit, Miss S’s case has since been closed and relations with her family are better than ever.”

Securing new beds with the help of Vernon Building Society’s Jubilee Fund

The  Furniture Station has been successfully chosen to receive a grant from 2012′s Vernon Building Society’s Jubilee Fund, a fund aimed at helping local community and charitable groups looking to make a difference in their area.

The Vernon Building Society awarded over £10,000 to 16 local organisations; those successful attended a presentation evening held in November to recognise the work they are carrying out in the community and present them with their awarded amount.

The Furniture Station was generously awarded with £990 to go towards the purchase of ten new double beds for our clients.

The bed & cot fund is a vital fund to continue to seek support on throughout each year to make up for the high demand. Each year we aim to raise a minimum of £7,000 towards the essential purchases. It is when people are relocated and rehoused that they often have nothing, most without the basic bed to sleep on.  With the help of The Vernon Building Society, these beds will enable our clients to have a good nights sleep and in the long term assist them to maintain their tenancy and establish stability.

For further information on the Vernon Building Society’s Jubilee Fund, you can visit https://www.thevernon.co.uk/jubilee_fund.

Seeking re-usable good quality beds, can you help?

We continue to seek for good quality re-usable beds to meet such high demand. Beds are the most basic of items required for families and individuals settling into a new tenancy, and we hope to encourage those that may otherwise go to landfill with their re-usable items, to call us for a free collection instead.

If you have any beds that you would like to donate to the Furniture Station and live in Stockport or some parts of East Cheshire then we can collect your bed free of charge, for it to be delivered to a family or individual in Stockport that needs the item, and will give it a new home.

Call us on 0161 456 0717 for any enquiries on collections.
