Some Examples of how The Furniture Station helps. (Please note these are not the real names of the clients, to ensure confidentiality)
‘I didn’t think anybody cared’
On one delivery Sarah was found sitting on the floor with a young baby in her arms, her possessions consisted of one suitcase and a plastic bag full of clothes – no furniture, cooker, beds, carpet or curtains. Broken windows were being replaced as the Furniture Station van arrived. Once the furniture was delivered the team went back to The Furniture Station to find some carpet, bedding and curtains. Sarah said until the Furniture Station van arrived that she thought nobody cared about her.
A new start
Kath had lived in the women’s refuge for nearly a year, having fled a violent partner, she was offered new accommodation but found the thought of furnishing the property daunting – she was referred to The Furniture Station by the Refuge and came and chose a selection of furniture and other goods. She said she was so encouraged and was able to look forward to a more positive future.
Improved health for elderly people
Tom aged 70 frequently attended hospital and A&E, if he was at home he slept in a chair and ate little due to lack of kitchen facilities. The Furniture Station provided a bed and bedding, a fridge and a microwave, this has had a real impact on his life, aided by health workers he has been able to re-learn kitchen skills and he now sleeps in the bed – he is now independent at home and his attendance at hospital and A&E has reduced dramatically.
Families in need Jane, a young mother with a 4 year old son and a young baby on the way came to The Furniture Station and chose a wardrobe, a chest of drawers, and a bookcase as well as a 3 piece suite. On the day of the delivery her health visitor asked if she could have a cot and when the brand new cot was delivered Jane was over the moon, she said she did not know what she would have done without The Furniture Station’s help.
Back to work David, a young man of 19 had just spent 6 weeks as an inpatient with mental health problems, he had lost confidence and social skills as a result of his illness. He was invited to work as a volunteer at The Furniture Station, he was encouraged and gained confidence and became less anxious to the extent that he has gained full time employment with a Stockport company.
Quotes from referral agencies and individuals The Furniture Station provides a valuable service to some of the most vulnerable families and individuals in our borough. The staff are warm and friendly and provide a welcoming atmosphere for our clients when choosing furniture.
Without the Furniture Station many of our families houses would be just that ‘houses’ but your organisation helps our families to create a home, with much of the furniture being either new or of a very high standard. The new cots are of particular benefit, one young mum I was visiting was very sceptical at first when I mentioned cots from The Furniture Station but when it arrived she couldn’t have been more thrilled she said ‘it felt like Christmas’ and appeared to be as proud of her cot as she was of her baby!
The speed with which the items were delivered, the friendliness of the service, the unflappable manner in which appointments were altered, emergencies met, and all-round consideration shown to a vulnerable man and his distraught mother cannot be adequately applauded. The Furniture Station items have made the difference between Mr X being comfortably rehoused and settling into his flat and his tenancy failing for want of basic items.
Many thanks to you all at The Furniture Station, for your help in supplying me with a much needed settee and chair. I was unable financially to replace my 30 year old suite but now have a beautiful one which will last me for my lifetime. God bless you and your work.
