We’re so sad to be sharing this update – but after 23 years serving the community, The Furniture Station is to finally close its shutters.
Just before Christmas, we brought you the devastating news that closure may be likely as the last 12-months have been an incredibly difficult time for the charity as we’ve struggled with increasing financial challenges. To continue into a 24th year would have required a significant £50,000 in ongoing funds – sadly we have not found our miracle.
The response we have had on our social media pages since announcing the possibility of closure has been incredible and we have been truly touched by your words of support, encouragement, personal tributes and passion for The Furniture Station.
We are incredibly proud of the service we have been able to provide over the past 23 years and being able to support vulnerable local people has meant so much to us. Our volunteers have worked so hard and have been the heart behind all of our work – giving their time and expertise tirelessly for the good of others. Whether in the office, on the van, in the workshops or transforming furniture at the Up-cycling Station, we want to thank every one of you for giving so much and being an invaluable credit to our organisation. The hard work of our tremendous volunteers has been reflected in accolades such as the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, Community Spirited Award 2015 and more recently, Stockport Community Hero 2017.
As from 30th March 2018, our charitable activities will come to an end. The important dates are as follows:
Our warehouse will close on Wednesday 28th February
As from 12pm on 28th February, our warehouse will close its doors and we’re sad to say that clients will no longer be able to access our service. If you need furniture leading up to this date, please ensure you get a referral from a local referral agency and attend before this date. You can call us on 0161 456 0717 for further information during February.
We will remain open during our opening times (Mon-Thurs, 9am – 11.45am) until 28th February 2018.
Support for Furniture Following Closure
- For clients facing crisis in Stockport, Stockport Local Assistance Scheme will continue their scheme to provide emergency furniture & white goods to those meeting eligibility. You can contact SLAS on 0161 474 2101 or email email@example.com.
- Stockport Homes Furniture Reuse Scheme offer support with pre-loved furniture items, more information can be provided at https://www.stockporthomes.org/furniture-recycling/
- Renewal North West is a local organisation which sells pre-loved furniture & white goods in Stockport and offer discount to those in financial hardship. You can contact RNW on 0161 476 2777.
Friday 16th February- last day for collections (this has been updated)
We will no longer be collecting furniture as from the 23rd February. Alternative re-use charities that offer collections within the area can be found at www.frn.org.uk/donate .
Renewal North West is an alternative charity that collects furniture & white goods for free within Stockport. They can reached on 0161 476 2777.
A fond farewell to The Furniture Station
In recognition of the 23 years of service in Stockport, we will be hosting a farewell afternoon on Wednesday 28th March, from 12.30pm until 2.30pm, inclusive of refreshments here at Hazel Grove Baptist Church to celebrate the wonderful work of The Furniture Station within our very own community. It would be our pleasure to see as many as you there that we have worked alongside in our mission to relieve poverty and speak with those whom lives we have touched upon, to celebrate the achievement of 23 years.
Lastly, thank you for everyone’s support over the years, to have allowed us to support our neighbours in hardship to access the most basic of items to ensure they can live a healthier, stable & independent lifestyle. This has meant everything to us.
