Community Heroes Award for The Furniture Station!

We are delighted to share with you some wonderful news – The Furniture Station  has won a Community Heroes Award!

We are over the moon – but what makes this achievement so very special is that were were nominated for it by a client we helped earlier this year.

The Proud of Stockport Awards seek to “say thank you to Stockport’s special citizens’ across nine categories. The Furniture Station was recognised in the  ‘Volunteering to promote independence in a community’ category  at the ceremony held at Stockport Town Hall.

“The reason we are recognising our Community Heroes is that more often than not, those who go the extra mile often go unrecognised,” say the organisers on the Stockport Council website.

The person who nominated us contacted the council to tell them about the positive experience they had at The Furniture Station. She had moved to Stockport not knowing anyone and was feeling very alone.

“I felt really isolated. I am on a low income and have a very sick child,” she said. “I had nothing in my home apart from cutlery and cleaning products. The Furniture Station has sorted everything for me: wardrobes, chest of drawers, settee, dining table. Everything was a reasonable price cannot complain. My flat is complete, thanks to Mike and a volunteer who said I can go back anytime, and so I did!”

As well as help from The Furniture Station she also accessed the Stockport Foodbank service and the Thursday Cafe – both of which also operate within Hazel Grove Baptist Church.

“I would like to thank The Furniture Station for helping me with furniture and other services too, such as the food bank and a beautiful cafe with a chat that goes a long way,” she said.

“The Furniture Station is a great service, helped me get my life and home back on track. I have nominated you as the Community Hero as a thank you. You deserve the award and recognition for all your hard work and effort on making me and my daughter smile. I hope Furniture Station is always there to access. You are all amazing people. Thank you.”

Our Chief Officer, Joanne, attended the awards alongside trustee, Mike and volunteers, Amanda and Mary. Speaking of the nomination, Joanne said:

“Having feedback like this and someone wanting to nominate us for an award  is just incredible. To seek to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable people in our community and then seeing that we did is just the best feeling. We are really grateful for the nomination and just hope we can continue to help more people get back on their feet and build a home through providing essential items.”
