The Furniture Station awarded Queens Award For Voluntary Service

We are delighted to announce that The Furniture Station has been awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for 2015.

The Furniture Station is one of 187 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work in their communities. The awards were created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and winners are announced each year on 2 June – the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation.

Project Manager, Alan Gunnion & Joanne Watson, Fundraiser from The Furniture Station attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace on 20th May 2015 where they met the Queen and other winners of this year’s award.

The Furniture Station will receive the award from the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Mr Warren J. Smith later this summer.

Alan Gunnion, Project Manager said: “We are so pleased to have received this prestigious award for the work our group carries out each day within the Borough of Stockport. We are proud to work as a team of 28 volunteers & 6 staff who continue to carry out the core operations of our activities and allow us to support local residents to live more independently through the re-use of good-quality furniture. Recognizing this team work of 21 years is both inspiring & motivating.

There continues to be a real need for the most basic items of furniture such as a bed to sleep on amongst local families who struggle to secure the essentials to help make their accommodation a home. Anyone wishing to donate their unwanted good quality furniture can call us on 0161 456 0717 to help us meet this need.”

The Furniture Station  continues to assist 1,000 homes in Stockport each year with re-used furniture & white goods, with volunteers playing an integral part of the daily process. Clients in need of our services are referred to us by local organisations such as council, housing officers, local advice agencies & charities. They are guided around the warehouse by our front office volunteers and are able to select the items they would like for their home for just a nominal charge, a delivery is then arranged.

Last year we re-used 3,721 items at a calculated weight of 106 Tonnes to assist 1,018 homes in Stockport. 205 of these items were repaired in the workshop by the workshop volunteers.

The  volunteers at The Furniture Station provide in excess of 4,000 hours annually, providing vital support with arranging collections, repairing woodwork, showing our clients around and providing essential support with admin. The operations of our activities would not be possible without this support.

It continues to be an ongoing challenge to secure  day to day operational costs so that our work in the community is continued. It costs the Furniture Station just £3 in transport costs to deliver furniture to just one home. If you’d like to help us in this way you can donate online. Alternatively,  you can join our Supporters Group by making a small monthly donation and help us continue to provide our service to disadvantaged people in Stockport.

If you would like our help with basic furniture & household items please do not hesitate to contact us on 0161 456 0717.
