What is The Furniture Station?
Launched in 1994, The Furniture Station is a registered charity and an anti-poverty initiative in Stockport, Greater Manchester. We supply re-usable, basic yet essential items of furniture and white goods to families & individuals in need within the Borough of Stockport.
How Does It Work?
1. We collect re-usable, good-quality furniture & electrical items from homes that no longer wish to have them, free of charge.
2. Our volunteers & electrical engineer repair, refurbish and clean the items if necessary in our workshops.
3. Stockport residents referred to our service via various local organisations then visit the warehouse to pick out and select items in order to turn their house into a home.
4. This service allows our clients the opportunity to establish a more stable, healthy & independent lifestyle, allows families within our community to establish and maintain their tenancies within the Borough of Stockport and prevent homelessness.
Who Do We Help?
Each year The Furniture Station makes approximately 2000 collections and 1000 deliveries; delivers around 4000 items of furniture and electrical items and supports over 1000 families and individuals in the Borough of Stockport, SK1-SK8 each year, saving an average weight of 115 Tonnes that would have otherwise have ended up in landfill.
All our clients are referred to us from recognized referral agencies such as Housing resettlement teams, Advice & Guidance Agencies, Social Workers, Health Workers, community and charitable organisations. Referrals are requested online by the agents themselves through our new implemented online referral system.
Using information from Profiling Stockport we have identified that 83 % of 2011′s furniture deliveries were delivered to Stockport Priority Areas.Those completing the feedback forms in 2011 show that 59% of the families we deliver to involve children under the age of 18, 27% are under the age of 5 which demonstrate the involvement of children in these difficult situations.
We expect to make a significant contribution to the lives of the individuals and families that we support and continue to expand to meet ever increasing demands.
